Sofia Travel Guide

Sofia is a dynamic Eastern European capital, distinguished by its unique combination of architecture styles and many beautiful orthodox churches. It claims to be one of the few capitals with a developed ski-resort so close to it - Vitosha mountain.

About Sofia

Sofia covers an area of 520.9 sq. miles (1349 square Km) and is estimated to have a population of 1.3 million people being the capital and the largest city in Bulgaria. It is one of the Europe's oldest cities, its recorded history spans at least 2,000 years.

National Art Gallery

art-gallery.jpgThe former Royal Palace now houses the National Art Gallery and the Ethnographic Museum. They are both closed on Mondays, admission 3lv for each. The National Gallery has a rich collection of Bulgarian art, not a long time ago it opened another section with masterpieces of famous Bulgarian artists. Behind the building there is a nice small park with statues and moder art that I recommend seeing, check my ‘Art in the Park’ tip.
